This project allowed us to delve into a very important and current issue which is globalization. globalization, which allows for corporations to go multi-national and transnational, has both pros and cons. It allows for people to be much more connected and on a global scale. Our assignment was to research an issue that would fit into the category of globalization, and write an opinion editorial that circled our opinion on said issue. We learned the strokes of writing op-eds, including certain formatting differences and much different paragraph spacings.
After finalizing this project, there were several things that I found very important and am glad to have learned. The first important take-away being about globalization, and how at first I had thought that it was a bad thing. It has taken me time, but through persistent research on my issue (sweatshops) I have learned that globalization is such a complex issue because there are reasons why it is beneficial and reasons why it isn’t. I learned that most importantly it depends what situation that you’re discussing but, for example, something like expanding corporations might actually be beneficial. The second important take-away involved the skills that had been learned through writing the op-ed, which were really important will help me in years to come.
We conducted three rounds of revision throughout our writing process, two with our peers and our final critique done by our teacher. As stated before, the skills learned throughout the writing process allowed me to utilize the op-ed writing and make the most of converting my research into a solid argument. It was also critical to utilize your thesis (or your main argument) throughout your paper, and through revising I was able to do so to connect back and make my op-ed flow much more.
As a second part of the project, we created political cartoons to correspond with our opinion editorials. Through completing several drafts of political cartoons, finally ending with my final draft, I learned how to apply humor to critical and sometimes controversial issues. When writing about topics that are often very tender it is easy to forget that humor and irony can be incorporated to ease a situation and to even get a point across easier.
