For this project, we were instructed to write about a social issue. After reading multiple Greek Tragedies (Oedipus and Medea), we picked out tragedies (our's being Prescription Drug Abuse). We were then told to construct a physical part of said project, our's being a graphic novel! Enjoy!

PROJECT REFLECTION
For our Social Issue project we were instructed to create a modern tragedy, after reading ancient greek tragedies (Medea and Oedipus). We then chose our social issues. My partner and I chose Prescription Drug Abuse We were then directed towards creating our ‘Physical Piece’, mine being a graphic novel. During this project there were several things that I felt proud of, the most being the Prologue in the actual script. I definitely felt that I was able to create something that made the subject feel so real, and yet so far away from what us Durango kids know.
“Joseph: Wait? Oxycodone? Isn’t that like a party drug? It’s harmless right?
Mark: Yeah man, this stuff ain’t gonna do nothin’ to you bro. And on top of that it makes you feel REAL good. Try it out! Harry, pass me that needle!
Harry: Joe you gotta try it! It’s harmless!
(Harry passes the needle on to Mark. Mark injects the needle into the main vein of his left arm, then leaves the room, heading back into the midst of the party.)
Joseph: Alright… let me try it. I’ve had a concussion before! How much worse can this be?
(Harry crushes a small, white pill. He pours a little bit of water on the now crushed pill, then uses the same needle to slowly suck in the liquid produced, and hands the now full needle to Joseph.)
Harry: Take the whole thing! You’ll love it man!
(Joseph takes the needle and looks at it for a second, then plunges it into his skin.)
(Scene fades out.)”
This part of my prologue really speaks to me, as it shows just how easy it is to fall into the habit of drug abuse. How ONE bad decision can change your life forever. I definitely feel that I was able to make this feel genuine and real.
For and incoming student, I would definitely suggest writing their tragedies within the three to four page range. My partner and I’s tragedy was nearly eight pages long. Not only does this make a lot more work for you when writing the actual play, but it means that your physical project will be MUCH more time consuming. Also if you ARE going to create a graphic novel as your physical project, you need to show professionalism. Without that, your project ends up looking messy and ultimately like a big pile of crap! I would definitely redo the pictures that were taken to incorporate into the physical part of the project. They were messy, and did not look like where the scene was set, aside from a very few couple that worked well. Overall? The time that was provided was enough for us, although it was cut close, and we had to continue to work throughout all the given in-class project work time.
When starting this project, the idea that working with projects seemed like a pretty good idea! Then, while the project progressed, I found that it was hard to collaborate (especially with the graphic novel). My partner and I couldn't edit the same slide, thus reducing the communication between us, and making things much harder than they needed to do. We ended up actually completely skipping a part of our script because there were several communication problems between us and so we had to rush that bit of the project on the LAST DAY! It was, in all honesty, a mess! So, in the future, I feel that for any project like this that it depends on what you are doing and how you could incorporate working with another person into making your project better! Otherwise? Work by yourself!
The hardest part of this project to overcome was taking the pictures, creating the graphic novels, then actually make everything fit together. Using google docs to create the graphic novel was definitely not the ideal program to use, as it was messy and would never look professional even if you spent fifty trillion years trying to make it perfect. I am unaware of any better programs to use, and this source was extremely easy and a lot less time consuming so I can;t complain TOO much! But it also prevented me from having a partner and I edit each section together, and it created a lot of confusion! Overall, this project was REALLY enjoyable, although there were some moments that were challenging. I enjoy creating what I did and I personally feel that there was a lot of growth mentally (what I was able to understand) about the Drug Epidemic.
